Discussion: “Disinformation and the problems of reporting on the Kakhovka HPP-related events”

Discussion: “Disinformation and the problems of reporting on the Kakhovka HPP-related events” As part of the program running in parallel to the exhibition “The River Screamed Like a Wounded Beast”, a discussion “Disinformation and the problems of reporting on the Kakhovka HPP-related events” will take place. In keeping with its “things are not what they seem” strategy, russia spread disinformation in Western media after the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP, pinning the crime it committed on Ukraine. The headlines of foreign publications abounded with “as Ukraine says”, “as Russia claims”, providing the reader with no specifics and leaving room for manipulation. At the same time, Ukrainian authorities imposed quite harsh restrictions on the coverage of the tragedy in the Kherson region by limiting access. What motivated them to do so? What effect did this have on the truthful coverage of the events in question overall? How did local Ukrainian producers and filmmakers find ways to access the affected territories in order to cover the tragedy and ecocide caused by the Kakhovka HPP explosion? We will talk to: Illia Yehorov, director and member of Babylon’13, Ryta Burkovska, actress, local producer, interviewer with Ukraine War Archive, Lisa Smith, director and co-founder of TABOR Production, Dmytro Hreshko, documentary filmmaker. The conversation will be moderated by Yehor Brailian, analyst at the Detektor Media Research Center. Media partner of the event: Detektor Media.
