Oleksandr Dovzhenko (1894โ1956) was a Ukrainian film director, writer, screenwriter, and artist. He is probably both the most significant and the most controversial figure in Ukrainian culture of the Soviet era. In his creative work, he developed a political and cultural project for Ukraine that was notably distinct from dogmatic communism. This mainly avant-garde project paradoxically combined futurism and traditionalism, utopianism and conservatism.
