The main exhibition of this year’s Kyiv Biennial will take place at Augarten Contemporary in Vienna. The complex, designed by architect Georg Lippert, was built in the 1950s to provide sculptor Gustinus Ambrosi with a place to work, live and exhibit. Three years after Ambrosi’s death, in 1975, the complex was turned into a public museum dedicated to the monographic presentation of the artist’s oeuvre. ⠀ At the turn of the millennium, the landmarked ensemble was revitalized by the architectural team zottlbuda and taken over by the Belvedere museum as a center for contemporary art. In 2012–2017, the complex hosted TBA21’s activities in an institutional cooperation with the Belvedere. This fall, after many years, the space will come to life hosting Kyiv Biennial 2023.

The projects realized under Laurenz (founded in 2020 by Aaron Amar Bhamra & Monika Georgieva) are often concerned with expanding the classical understanding of exhibition making and look for inspiration in different disciplines. Hosting and working with the existing conditions, often thematizing them and allowing them to take the main role rather than just being a context, is an important part of our collective practice and the way we communicate with artists and cultural practitioners. Through Laurenz, we aim to offer local and international contemporary artists and cultural practitioners a platform for expression and exploration. By focusing on a more discourse-based collective work, we seek to create new and nurture existing relationships within the cultural field.

Neuer Kunstverein Wien (NKW) is an interdisciplinary space for exhibitions, artistic interventions and discourses. The aim of the NKW is to offer Austrian and international artists a laboratory and 'a free zone' of exchange, production and presentation of contemporary art. The NKW engages artists in dialogue with exciting architecture and unusual locations in Vienna. It operates in changing spaces, interacting and responding with its art projects to the respective urban and architectural environment. NKW is only a 5-minute walk from St. Marx station. Accessible via S-Bahn Line S7 from Praterstern S+U, Rennweg S, and Landstraße Wien Mitte S+U, or tram line 71 (Kaiserebersdorf) from Rennweg S, Unteres Belvedere, Schwarzenbergplatz, Oper/Karlsplatz, Ring/Volkstheater, Schottentor. From the main exhibition of the Kyiv Biennial 2023 in Augarten (Scherzergasse 1A, 1020 Vienna): Tram line 5 (towards Praterstern S+U) from Am Tabor station, then S-Bahn S7 (towards Vienna Airport Station) to St. Marx.

The relationship between power and masculinity and the way they are displayed in ritual, political or everyday actionsform a central theme in Franz Kapfer’s work. Referencing role models from 1970s performance art, he uses an alter ego to question stereotypical constructions of masculinity as well as male sexuality and the sociopolitical environment from which the sometimes toxic concepts of manhood arise. In the Austrian context this is, for example, Catholicism with its traditional image of the family and sometimes archaic rituals of masculinity, which are also extremely important for right-wing extremist movements. In the installation Im Rücken die Ruinen von Europa [At My Back, the Ruins of Europe] (2019 21), the artist devoted himself to the history of such extremist symbols and traced, for example, the origin of the lambda symbol of the «Identitarian» movement back to antiquity. For the Kyiv Biennial, Franz Kapfer has set up a branch of H.K.W.Waffenschmiede [H.K.W.Armourer], which he founded. It is open to the public and invites visitors to watch as the artist pedantically crafts «firearms». The shape and size of the objects underline the immensity and fascination of power; in the very end, everything is supposed to result in the production of «miracle weapons».

new jörg was founded in 2013 as part of a community studio in the 20th district of Vienna. Since then, the association has been characterised by a lively exhibition and event program, which has established it as a place for contemporary art in the city. The international program of solo exhibitions curated by Axel Koschier and Stefan Reiterer focuses on positions that are rarely or not at all represented in the traditional gallery and institutional landscape of Austria. In addition, events are organised in cooperation with local and internationally active organisations, e.g.: Artist Lecture Series Vienna, Rua do Sol Porto, SPZ Prague, Black Ball Projects New York, Billytown The Hague, Atelie Fidalga São Paulo, Biquini Wax EPS Mexico City, etc. Within the framework of the association's activities, publications are financed and edited and a collection of editions is built up. Other very central points are the payment of an artist's fee and the coverage of transport, material, and travel costs. According to new jörg, exhibiting should also pay off at the moment and not have to remain exclusively a projection for the future.
